Little hermits you’ll love.

They’re looking for shell-ter, and your home is perfect!

Hermit crabs are easy to look after and make a great first pet. Being nocturnal, they mostly sleep throughout the day, and become more active at night.

They’re also tropical animals and like their environment to be warm and humid. Their aquarium should ideally be heated to about 30 degrees, with bowls of water to create the right humidity. Hermit crabs need shell grit or aquarium sand on the floor of their enclosure to enable their natural burrowing behaviour, as well as some driftwood for them to explore. Hermit crabs love climbing, so this is perfect to keep them entertained.

Hermit crabs actually need two types of water — freshwater for drinking, and saltwater for bathing.

In terms of diet, these shelled critters can be fed commercial crab chow which we stock, or fresh food daily in small amounts. Suitable food includes fish pellets, bread, cereals, apples, and other fruit. They also enjoy shredded coconut.

Finally, hermit crabs may not look like the most social creatures, but they love company. We recommend you purchase more than one so they have a companion.
